The herds move all year. Here is where they usually are, and where to base a group in each season.
The Great Migration is not an event, it is a continuous circuit. The question is never whether it is happening but where it is. ## January to March — calving The southern Serengeti and Ndutu. Around half a million calves are born in a few weeks, and the predator activity is the most intense of the year. Our preferred window for photographic groups. ## April to May — the long rains Quieter, greener, cheaper. Access can be difficult and some camps close. Good value for a small, flexible group; not a season for a large incentive. ## June to July — the western corridor The herds move west and north, with the Grumeti river crossings. Fewer vehicles than the Mara crossings and considerably easier to secure camp space. ## August to October — the Mara crossings The images everyone has seen. Base in the northern Serengeti or a Mara conservancy. Book eleven months ahead, and manage expectations: a crossing cannot be scheduled. ## November to December — the short rains The herds drift south again. A pleasant, uncrowded shoulder season that pairs well with a Zanzibar finish over the festive period.
